Why Your Placer Gold Recovery Is Low: 3 Common Mineral Processing Mistakes

Published: Sep 25, 2026 | Author: WSHT Mining Machinery

Many small-to-medium placer gold mines in Africa run washing plants day and night but still see disappointing gold recovery rates. Some projects only recover 40–65% of total gold in raw ore, while the rest flows away with tailings. Low recovery is not always caused by poor gold grade; in most cases, it comes from avoidable processing errors in site operation, equipment matching and ore pre-treatment.

In this article, we break down the 3 most frequent mistakes in placer gold processing, explain how each loses gold, and share practical fixes to lift recovery, especially for mines with clay-rich deposits and fine free gold particles.

1. Incomplete Clay Disintegration — Fine Gold Locked Inside Clay Balls

Clay-bound placer ore is one of the top reasons for poor gold recovery. Raw ore contains clay lumps wrapping tiny gold grains. If you simply feed ore directly into a trommel without sufficient scrubbing, clay balls stay intact and pass through screening together with gold, discharging into tailings.

  • Symptom: Visible clay balls in tailings; coarse gold captured well but fine gold recovery drops sharply.
  • Typical recovery loss: 15% ~ 30% locked gold wasted.
  • Solution: Add wet scrubber / vibrating gold washing machine before screening. Extended washing time breaks clay agglomerates completely. For heavy clay ore, use high-pressure water spray inside the trommel, ensure clay fully slakes before classification.

2. Improper Classification & Wrong Gravity Separation Setup for Fine Gold

Different gold particle sizes require different gravity separation equipment. A common error: using only sluice boxes to capture all gold. Sluices work great for coarse gold (>0.5mm), but lose massive amounts of fine gold below 0.2mm.

Gold Particle Size Recommended Equipment Estimated Recovery Range
Coarse gold >0.5mm Trommel + sluice box 85% ~95%
Fine gold 0.075–0.5mm Centrifugal gold concentrator 80% ~90%
Ultra-fine gold <0.075mm Concentrate further processing or leaching Depends on ore properties

Note: Without centrifugal concentrator, fine gold recovery may fall to 40% or lower, even if sluice boxes look loaded with black sand.

3. Unstable Feed Rate & Incorrect Water Ratio

Many site operators feed ore randomly: sometimes overloading the washing plant, sometimes running with too little material. Water flow control is also neglected. Too much water dilates the pulp and washes fine gold away; insufficient water causes blockage and poor material stratification.

  • Overfeeding: Material piles up on screen, gold cannot separate from gangue.
  • Excessive water: High pulp velocity carries fine gold out of gravity devices.
  • Fix: Install constant feeding hopper & feeder. Maintain solid-liquid ratio within the range recommended for your machine. Keep steady 24h continuous feeding rather than batch surge feeding.

How to Verify Gold Loss On Site

Collect tailing samples at regular intervals, use pan test to check for lost fine gold. If visible fine gold appears in tailings, check the above three points in sequence: clay slaking → particle classification → feed & water balance.

الأسئلة الشائعة

Q1: Can I add centrifugal concentrator to my existing trommel washing line?
A: Yes. It is the most common upgrade. Install centrifugal concentrator after sluice box to capture fine gold from sluice concentrate or tailing stream, typically lifting total recovery by 10–20%.
Q2: What is the target recovery rate for normal clay-rich placer gold?
A: For free placer gold without encapsulated gold, well-configured plants can reach 75%~88% overall recovery. Heavy clay deposits need extra scrubbing to hit this target.
Q3: Is clay disintegration only needed for high-clay ore?
A: Even low clay content (5-10%) can form small mud balls after rain. It is better to reserve scrubbing section if rainy season brings sticky raw ore.
